Arts Mentoring

Light One Candle’s goal is to create peace and unity among people of all races, faiths, and cultures through cooperative educational initiatives in the arts. Partnerships with local organizations make it possible for Light One Candle Focus Schools to participate together in many community arts, music and dance activities.

Students have participated in yearly “Fun Arts Day" workshops.  Elementary schoolchildren have joined together in international folk dancing, sing-a-longs, visual arts, games, and storytelling sessions at the International Folk Culture Center and learned about their own and each others rich cultural, ethnic, and religious traditions.

The workshops have created friendships and respect among children of diverse backgrounds and planted the seeds of peace and understanding at an early age. Afterwards these same children have re-united in folk dance performances and art exhibits at Light One Candle events, at city festivals and conventions, and at local churches and school events.

Private Music Lessons

Thanks to Light One Candle's partner Northside Music and funding from the Music Foundation of San Antonio, close to 80 school children at four inner-city schools received music scholarships for private piano, violin and guitar lessons during and after school, and during the summer.

Mr. Robin Abraham, owner of Northside Music and the representative for the Music Foundation of San Antonio, selected the music curriculum and chose the music teachers for the schools. The Music Foundation funded the teachers’ salaries. Light One Candle coordinated the program with the schools and provided many of the instruments.

Music Scholarship elegibility was based on financial need and commitment on the part of the student to learn to play an instrument.
