Light One Candle/Dr. Gregorio M. Canales Memorial Education Fund and Endowment Fund Honor the Memory of a Great Humanitarian

Light One Candle honors the memory of Dr. Gregorio M. Canales. A tireless humanitarian, this notable South Texas orthopedic surgeon and teacher was committed to the highest values of the medical and teaching professions.

Remembered by his patients and students for his extraordinary kindness and compassion, he devoted many hours to the community, especially to the polio clinics he helped to establish during the epidemic of the 1950's. As a physician, a major focus of his work was the Santa Rosa Crippled Children's Hospital.

As a teacher and mentor, he imparted his enthusiasm and knowledge to orthopedic residents at Washington University and the Shriner's Children's Hospital in St. Louis, Missouri, at military hospitals and the UT Health Science Center in San Antonio, Texas. A strong faith in God, deep concern for others and the belief that a quality education can make a difference, were the guiding forces of his life.

The Light One Candle Education Fund and the Light One Candle Endowment Fund were established at the San Antonio Area Foundation in San Antonio, Texas in Memory of Dr. Gregorio M. Canales, a Light One Candle member and volunteer. These two funds help provide a quality and value-centered education for children in public and non-public schools in San Antonio, Texas. For more information about these funds please contact the San Antonio Area Foundation at 210/225-2243.

The Peace and Unity Mural

A unique hand-painted, porcelain tile mural entitled “Light One Candle for Peace and Unity” was donated to Christus Santa Rosa Hospital’s new David Christopher Goldsbury Center for Children and Families by supporters of the Light One Candle Children’s Education Fund. It is a gift made in memory of the late Dr. Gregorio M. Canales, a notable humanitarian, physician and teacher at Christus Santa Rosa Hospital.

The announcement of this gift was made on December 3, 2000 at a special dedication ceremony for this regional primary and pediatric specialty health care center serving children and adults in San Antonio and all of South Texas.

Created by Smithsonian artist Consuelo Gonima, this colorful 12ft. by 6ft. mural celebrates global diversity and the mission of Light One Candle.  It is a welcoming presence and the focal point of the entry lobby of the new David Christopher Goldsbury Center for Children and Families.
