FIRST SCHOLARSHIP AWARDS

 

 

In 1994 Light One Candle sponsored its first Light One Candle Scholarship Awards.  Since then volunteers and donors have made it possible for over 100 economically disadvantaged
Catholic, Jewish and Christian
children to attend religious sponsored elementary schools in San Antonio, Texas.


 Please Note: Light One Candle Scholarships for the 2008-2009 School Year are available
only
to the Focus Schools listed below.  Applications must be received by
March 1, 2008. 

SCHOLARSHIP FOCUS SCHOOLS: SOUTHSIDE CONSORTIUM OF CATHOLIC SCHOOLS

The largest number  of students seeking Light One Candle Scholarships are the children of Hispanic Catholic immigrant families who live in some of San Antonio's most economically challenged neighborhoods.     SCHOLARSHIP FOCUS SCHOOL: THE ELEANOR KOLITZ ACADEMY, A JEWISH DAY SCHOOL

     

    The Eleanor Kolitz Academy is the only Jewish Day School
    (preK-8th)
     serving all of San Antonio, Texas.  Economically disadvantaged Jewish children who need financial assistance to attend this school are eligible for Light One Candle Scholarships.  To learn more about this school click on:

    SCHOLARSHIP FOCUS SCHOOL: THE ANTIOCH CHRISTIAN ACADEMY

    The Antioch Christian Academy is a one of a kind Christian School (preK-8th) that primarily serves the needs of African American children. Children from the lower income east side neighborhoods that surround the school would like to attend this school with the help of Light One Candle Scholarships.  To learn more click on:  www.actnet.org/pages/academy.htm

     

    These Focus schools were chosen because of ....

    • Strong institutional leadership
    • Discipline and safety
    • The importance of each school to its neighborhood
    • A history of serving the needs of economically disadvantaged children
    • Commitment to a student's high academic and character development 
    • A clear mission based on an inspirational theology and shared values  
    • A caring family environment enhanced by the schools' smaller size
    SCHOLARSHIP ELIGIBILITY AND APPLICATION

    To be eligible for consideration for a tuition-assistance scholarship of $200.00 to $1000.00 to any of the "Focus" schools listed above, a student must:

    • attend or wish to attend a "Focus" School listed above
    • be of good character
    • rmaintain a scholastic average of 75 or higher
    • meet all admission requirements to the "Focus" school to which they are applying
    • demonstrate the need for financial assistance  

    A student meets the economic need criteria for a $200.00 to $1000.00 tuition-assistance scholarship when he/she falls under the Federal Free and Reduced Price Lunch guidelines www.fns.usda.gov/cnd/lunch/ or demonstrates extreme financial need due to extraordinary circumstances. 

    • Scholarship recipients are selected upon the recommendation of the Principal of the school to which they are applying. 
    • Scholarship money is to be applied directly to tuition and is not to be used for the purchase of school supplies, uniforms, or for registration fees. 
    • Scholarship winners are notified of their award, in writing, by the schools to which they are applying.  

     

    Light One Candle Scholarships are available to the Focus Schools listed above and to other religious based schools that pass Board approval.  Please mail your application to:  Light One Candle Scholarships, P.O. Box 781371, San Antonio, Texas 78278 by  March 1 .  Only students attending or wishing to attend a Focus School or another Board approved school are eligible for scholarships.
